The Charlotte Museum of History offers a comprehensive look at the Southern Piedmont's Heritage from the 1800's to the Twentieth Century. Visitors can reach out and touch the past in authentic settings, imagining life as it was actually lived in days gone by.

History Preserved and History In The Making
This 36,000 square foot museum offers both permanent and changing exhibits, craft demonstrations, public programs, research library and reading room, hands on learning for children, and the Museum Shop offering authentic crafts, gifts and books.

Hezekiah Alexander Homesite
Down a wooded path from the Museum, Charlotte's oldest surviving home invites you to the year 1774. The "Rock House" of Hezekiah Alexander, his wife, 10 children and 13 slaves, proudly sits on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, costumed docents lead the journey into Charlotte's past, pointing out historic architecture, homemade furnishings and the Revolutionary way of life.

Sculpture Garden
Positioned between the American Freedom Bell and the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite, a life size bronze sculpture of the "Back Country Patriot" honors Alexander and other patriots who gave their lives for independence. At the Sculpture, enjoy a picnic, listen to the gently flowing brooke, commemorate your visit with a photo and drink in nature right inside the city.

American Freedom Bell
Created to honor those who dedicated their lives to the cause of freedom, The American Freedom Bell symbolizes the patriotic heritage of Charlotte, Mecklenburg County and the Carolinas. The bronze bell reads, "Never forget that you are free." The American Freedom Bell is seven times larger than the Liberty Bell and is the largest cast bell in the world viewed at eye level.
